A gold color metal and enamel device 1 1/8 inches (2.86 cm) in height overall consisting of a stylized blue ear of wheat with scarlet center bearing a vertical grouping of four gold six-pointed stars, all on a buff ellipse enclosed by a blue scroll around sides and bottom bearing the motto "THE BEST FOR THE BEST" in gold letters.
The City of Chicago, where the unit was activated, is represented by the four stars and divided blue band, recalling the flag of the city. The four stars also represent the Fourth United States Army, to which the Group is assigned. The State of Illinois, of which a large portion of the land is given over to agriculture, is symbolized by the ear of wheat. Buff and scarlet refer to the support mission of the unit.
The distinctive unit insignia was approved on 3 October 1985.
